Yes, he’s known for carpets and vinyl, but there’s also a surprise chapter in jewellery, a set of skills that transfer across trades, and the quiet truth of taking over a family business you never planned to run.

If you care about small business branding, the human side of family firms, or how to tell a story that goes beyond a job title, this one’s for you. You’ll leave with ideas on naming, positioning and making your craft visible, plus a few lines you’ll want to steal for your next team meeting.

SPEAKER_01:

Welcome to the extra slide. Slice, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice.

SPEAKER_00:

Do you know we might have to record a jingle for that at some point? We have to. It's too good.

SPEAKER_01:

And I'm going to trademark it. Because someone might take it.

SPEAKER_00:

Well.

SPEAKER_01:

So Daryl Smith.

SPEAKER_00:

Darryl Smith. The carpet guy. The prince of Smith The Prince of Flooring.

SPEAKER_01:

He wasn't happy with it.

SPEAKER_00:

I don't care whether he's happy about it or not. This is what it is. If he said his dad was the king of carpets.

SPEAKER_01:

He has to be the prince.

SPEAKER_00:

He has to be the prince. And bearing in mind the shit he gave Doris for talking about It's just a carpet. He's just a carpet. Yeah. Well, then I can't call him the Prince of Carpets, it's got to be the Prince of Flooring.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, yeah, because he talks about vinyl and all this other stuff.

SPEAKER_00:

Hang on, that's specific to oh whatever. Whatever.

SPEAKER_01:

So I know there's a lot about it. Hang on a second.

SPEAKER_00:

Should we just call it stuff you walk on and be done with it? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

It could be Daryl the footman. Oh no, that's a different thing.

SPEAKER_00:

That's a whole n that's a whole nother um kettle of fish, that one.

SPEAKER_01:

So yeah, you didn't know about his um jewelry past, do you?

SPEAKER_00:

I didn't know about his jewellery past. I didn't know I didn't know a lot of stuff about Daryl. I think the problem is is that obviously you meet people, and this is the whole point of the podcast. You meet people in a context where you get to find out the real person behind the brand. Yeah. Rather than, oh yeah, so his dad had a carpet company flooring. Yeah. Hang on, can I just ask a question? Is he Archway carpets or archway flooring?

SPEAKER_01:

Archway carpet.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay. Just checking.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah, it's Archway Carpenter.

SPEAKER_00:

Hey, Daryl, when you listen to this one, just so you know, you can't give us too much shit about getting it's just the carpet, when you've named your carp company after it.

SPEAKER_01:

Archway carpet.

SPEAKER_00:

But yeah, I mean, obviously, whenever you meet him, he's never gonna tell you, Oh yeah, I used to do this and I used to do this and I used to do this. No. Instead, we just get That's why we have this. You just take the assumption of Dad had a carpet business for you.

SPEAKER_01:

You know, I do love the fact that he had no intention of being with his dad, and now he's pretty much running that business.

SPEAKER_00:

I think if you asked him, I don't think there's pretty much. I think he just is running that business. Yes. But you know, again, just to stir him up, well, this also will teach him to subscribe or not subscribe. If he's not subscribed, he doesn't know what we're talking about, which means I can give him as much shit as I like, and he's just never gonna know unless someone tells him.

SPEAKER_01:

But one of our thousands of subscribers will tell him.

SPEAKER_00:

No, I don't. I think we've got such loyal subscribers. There's they've got such a level of loyalty to us on the show, they'll just go, like if Daryl ever says, So what did they talk about with me? Yes, are you gonna have to subscribe yourself? Yeah, that's the only way you're gonna find out.

SPEAKER_01:

But no, I I I always love speaking to Daryl, he's meant and I love when he went to school at Kesgrave and had like the halls and the sports, and he was like, What did he say he was? The head boy of the yeah, head boy or like yeah, his hall or And I just went off at that point, like, yeah, we're uh we're a You were in Hogwarts. We were a Hogwarts at that point, yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

It was so I didn't I didn't realise, I thought it was only like, you know, real posh, you know. You imagine if someone said, Oh, you know, I I went to Eton and I was in, you know, such and such, and and you go, yeah, that's fine, it's Eton or Cambridge or whatever. I think Kesgrave did it.

SPEAKER_01:

I know, they had like whole cups.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah, that's weird.

SPEAKER_01:

I love it. I I love it so much.

SPEAKER_00:

You love it, but would you have seen that as toak?

SPEAKER_01:

No.

SPEAKER_00:

Exactly.

SPEAKER_01:

Someone would have nicked a cup.

unknown:

No.

SPEAKER_01:

So what are we what are we rating, Daryl, then? On let's do cakes today. Slice of cake.

SPEAKER_00:

On a cake scale.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes.

SPEAKER_00:

I would say Don't mean to kick off.

SPEAKER_01:

I'm doing a twelve slice. I'm not saying twelve slice.

SPEAKER_00:

Yeah. But you know you could cut like the tiniest cake into twelve.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh, it doesn't matter.

SPEAKER_00:

Okay, alright, twelve slice. Take it, take it as you want.

SPEAKER_01:

Twelve slices, slice, slice, slice, slice, slice. Of a Victoria sponge.

SPEAKER_00:

Do you know what that's a great shout? Do you know what I'm gonna go with? I'm gonna go with a rock cake.

SPEAKER_01:

Oh. I haven't had one of them in ages. I'm trying to be if I've seen you eat one lately.

SPEAKER_00:

Well, that's not only you will know what that constitutes.

SPEAKER_01:

That's a good one.

SPEAKER_00:

But yeah.

SPEAKER_01:

But no, cool. Thank you very much, Daryl.

SPEAKER_00:

And thank you to our subscribers. Thank you to all our subscribers. Never mind, Daryl. Daryl, we don't care about too much now. We can give him as much shit as we like.

SPEAKER_01:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00:

He's not on the show anymore.

SPEAKER_01:

But thank you to all those listening.

SPEAKER_00:

But the but the subscribers.

SPEAKER_01:

Yes.

SPEAKER_00:

Millions and millions that are coming to join us out.

SPEAKER_01:

Listen to our voices.

SPEAKER_00:

Do you know if we if we keep on talking about like we if maybe we should do that as a hook? Like, how many subscribers are we going to go for this time? If we start off with tens and then hundreds and then thousands and then millions.

SPEAKER_01:

Well, if you manifest it, don't you? You don't just keep putting it out there and it'll subscribers, subscribers, subscribers.

SPEAKER_00:

Millions of subscribers. Subscribers. Yeah. Thank you very much to our loyal subscribers. And um, yeah, we'll catch you in the next one.
